Sedation Dentistry

Here at Friendly Dentistry, your oral health is our primary concern.  While many people have a normal fear of dental treatment, some individuals have more difficulty tolerating treatment than others.  Sedation dentistry is a safe and effective way to receive the dental care you need while alleviating the fear associated with the dentist chair.  Examples of reasons why sedation dentistry might be right for you include:

  • Difficulty feeling numb during procedures
  • Past traumatic experience with a dentist
  • Fear of ridicule - due to years of dental neglect
  • Sensitive gag reflex
  • Need multiple procedures or an unusually long procedure in one visit

Sedation dentistry allows you to have important dental procedures done while you are completely relaxed and comfortable.  During a procedure, you don't really fall asleep, even though sometimes it feels like you did. That's because sedation feels so relaxing and peaceful that you don't even notice the passing of time. Many of the medications used in sedation have an amnesiac effect as well, leaving you with little or no memory of the dental appointment, and further adding to the feeling that you were asleep.

The process is simple. You are given one pill to take before your arrival to the office. Prior to the start of your procedure, we connect you to a monitor so we can record blood pressure, pulse and blood oxygen levels during your treatment. If necessary, more sedative can be administered to ensure that you are comfortable and relaxed. This medication is called Triazolam, a derivative of Valium, and has been used safely and effectively for years. One of its main benefits is that it wears off rapidly, leaving you more alert shortly after your visit.
